PART 1
Joel T. Birkmeier

The fleet continues to grow at the LCYC. With the success of the youth sailing program we currently operate five Prams and five Sunfish. Two dolly carts have been ordered to aide in the launching of these boats and we are currently studying the options for a new wood launching ramp at the beach. In addition, a winter storage rack is being considered for the small sailboats. Stacking these boats on the concrete in the boathouse has inflicted stress on the hulls.

The LCYC board has decided to sell “Elsie” the club Ensign, and it has been placed on a sealed bid status. Bids are being received until August 17, 2007.

Lastly, we purchased a new outboard engine for the caretaker launch this summer. The old engine was in constant need of repairs and very unreliable.

Respectfully submitted,

Joel T. Birkmeier

PART 2
2007 Ensign Fleet Racing Report
Racing Chairperson: Dick Knapp
Vice Chairpersons: Sheelagh Knapp and Tom Flood

Though it has been windier than many people would like, this has been a fantastic year for sailboat racing, and we're pleased to have had twelve boats in the B. Fleet and eighteen in the A. Fleet. The series would not have been such a huge success without the help of many others in addition to the Race Committee. We would like to thank the following people:

Charlie Albright and his grandson, Bradley, and Pat Pollard and his crew for doing extraordinary work on the chase boats.

Mary Kay Lawless and Stephanie and Peg LaBelle for their valuable assistance on the committee boat.

Rex Ely, a man of all tasks, who performed chase boat duties with the help of Ed Terrill and who also did committee boat work on a regular basis. He was a real lifesaver.

Dave and Linda Parlin, who provided the race committee with incredible amounts of well organized information. Dave also handled the ordering of
this year's popular regatta tee shirts.

Tom and Frank LaBelle and the crew of Foxy Lady for setting the starting pin. It is because of their placement of the mark that we had such good starting lines, which were set for nearly perfect windward marks.

Tom Flood, whose knowledge about racing was invaluable, and who worked on the committee boat on a regular basis.

Sheelagh Knapp, who didn't miss a race.

Tom and Sarah Gammans, without whom we would have been absolutely lost.

There were some changes made this year to the Ensign racing rules. Rather than having a 720 penalty for rule infractions, we went to a 360 rule, and we developed a protest protocol to help standardize the protest procedure.

In addition, Dick and Sheelagh Knapp would like to provide a trophy for the winning boat of the season in the B. Fleet. The Knapp Trophy will be presented starting in the 2008 racing season.

MACKINAC RACE

The races were held on two beautiful days, with moderate winds for a beat to the Island, and a stiff wind for a record run back home.

Results

3rd: Andrea E.

2nd: Instinct

1st: Waterdog, whose name will be engraved on the Horsburgh Trophy.

ISLANDER SERIES

The first race, on June 30, had cool weather and a good
wind to get the racers around LaSalle. Unfortunately, strong wind, rain and big waves out on the lake kept B. boats from racing on July 14 around Marquette..

Results

3rd: Borealis

2nd: Second Wind

1st: Foxy Lady, whose name will be engraved on the Islander Trophy, which is housed in the Islander Bar in Hessel.

REGATTA

The races this year started out on Wednesday with perfect wind,
though the temperature was a little high and there was a short time of no air between the two races. Thursday and Friday more than made up for that with wild and windy conditions both days, resulting in two dismastings and another major collision. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in any of the accidents.

Results B. Fleet

3rd: Sunrunner

2nd: Katogi

1st: Dragon Lady, whose name will be engraved on the Iverson
